Meet Nicole

Before joining TCES Nurture Primary

Nicole’s attendance was 0%, she was not accessing education.

She had diagnoses of Dyspraxia, ADHD and Autism.

Nicole self-harmed and expressed thoughts of suicide.

She had indicators of emotionally based school avoidance (EBSA) and became dysregulated in the mornings as she did not want to come to school.

Nicole found learning without adult support difficult, as she needed encouragement to go into the classroom and to start a task.

She found it difficult to engage in learning, so she needed frequent verbal prompts to try to keep her on task.

She screamed when dysregulated.

Nicole always needed to bring in a different transitional object or a piece of comforting clothing from home to support transitions between different environments.

Nicole sometimes used inappropriate language or phrases and occasionally did so to antagonise or try to get a reaction.

Progression

Nicole’s attendance increased to 68%.

Nicole no longer left the school premises unsupervised. She gradually built trust with staff, which enabled smoother and safer arrivals to school.

Incidents of self-harm reduced considerably as Nicole developed safer coping strategies.

Nicole accessed a more personalised curriculum that suited her pace and learning style.

Nicole responded well to visual and verbal prompts, helping her stay on task for longer periods.

She required less adult intervention to transition between environments and became more independent in navigating the school.

Nicole developed better ways to express her emotions more appropriately, leading to a reduction in incidents of self-harm and verbal expressions of suicidal thoughts.

She became more aware of social cues and began to develop a better understanding of appropriate interactions with peers.

Nicole became better at identifying early signs of dysregulation and began using therapeutic strategies such as movement breaks or calming spaces.

She no longer attempted to abscond and instead communicated her need for space.

Nicole successfully stepped down into TCES East London School in 2025.

“I’m so proud of Nicole, her transformation has been incredible. She’s grown into a caring, dedicated person who is deeply passionate, and we’re all excited to see what she does next.” Lauren – Nicole’s Teacher
