ELSO students celebrate World Book Day through poetry and illustration

East London School Outreach students marked World Book Day by exploring poetry in a creative and hands-on way.

During the activity, students read a range of poems and were encouraged to think about the words, themes and ideas that stood out to them. They then selected their favourite poems and created illustrations to bring them to life.

The session gave students the opportunity to express themselves through both writing and art. Some students created detailed drawings inspired by the poems they had read, while others wrote their own poetry and added illustrations to match their ideas.

Each piece reflected the student’s own experiences, imagination and interpretation of the poem, showing how powerful words and creativity can be when combined.

Activities like this help students build confidence in sharing their ideas, while also developing a love of reading and storytelling.

World Book Day provided a wonderful opportunity for students and staff to celebrate books, creativity and the many different ways stories can be expressed!
