Outreach Student Builds Confidence on Go-Karting Enrichment Trip
Enrichment is not just fun activities if you embed learning throughout. One of our students recently went go-karting supported by his Therapeutic Education Practitioners (TEPs).
The day offered much more than the excitement of racing around the track. This activity links to preparation for adulthood building confidence by entering a new environment, practicing communication skills through interacting with the venue staff through safety talks and guidance of how best to tackle to course.
Many of our students experience a level of anxiety, for this student to attend and engage it took confidence for them to enter the building, talk to staff and listen to instruction. Taking part of a unfamiliar activity encourages independence, and supports future ventures by practicing these steps which is a huge step in building their confidence in the outside world.
After getting ready and learning how to use the go-kart safely, our student took to the track and enjoyed racing alongside his TEP. His enthusiasm was clear as he reflected on the experience:
“This was a brilliant day out. It was fun to drive a go-kart and race around with my teachers. I would like to do it again.”
He also shared how happy he was to have members of his support network there to watch and encourage him as he took part.
The trip was a wonderful example of how positive shared experiences can support engagement and help young people feel more confident. It also provided an opportunity for our student and his TEPs to strengthen their relationships in a fun and supportive setting.
“It is wonderful to see young people from our service given the opportunity to end the year with fun and challenging activities. These experiences demonstrate their growth while strengthening relationships between pupils and staff.”
Everyone involved was happy to see our student embrace the experience and enjoy his time on the track. We look forward to providing more opportunities for our young people to explore new interests, create positive memories and continue building their confidence.
