Black History Month kicks off at TCES East London and North West London schools
On Wednesday, 4th & Friday 7th October, TCES East London School pupils and TCES North West London were given the opportunity to purchase books ‘Ruby's Reads’ for their classes. They are a multicultural, diverse, and inclusive children’s bookshop. It is important to have a collection of books that represents all children from different backgrounds, abilities, ethnicities, and the LGBT community.
Ruby's Reads ensures that all her books appeal to every child, especially the black community. While celebrating, every child can pick up a book and see themselves represented. They celebrate Black History every day of the year. For Black History month it is important we highlight black authors, musicians, illustrators etc., and champion black voices, which are often not represented as much as they should be.
In selecting their books, pupils made interesting and excellent choices, and there were some resonating to them personally. Pupils enjoyed looking at various book styles and prints, the details and presentation of these books were stunning to look at.
TCES North West London kicked off their celebrations for Black History Month in style with handmade afro-styled fashion fans, jewellery and accessories. The teachers and pupils worked closely together on decorating the school entrance. It was filled with colourful African print materials and motivational posters that included exemplary Black Britons from the past and present years. A few pupils even bought their own handmade materials that represented their backgrounds to sell on the day. There were interesting questions from the pupils from both schools and services, who were intrigued by the variety of books available. It was a fun-filled day for both schools, and we look forward to more Black History Month celebrations in the future.
